Drug Detox Symptoms

Whether you are addicted to prescription drugs, illicit drugs or inhalants you are going to experience symptoms of withdrawal during detox. These symptoms will vary by many key factors; the type of drug abuse, the dose used, how regular you use the drug, your age and size. These factors too will determine the severity of your withdrawal and the duration the symptoms will last.

What is Drug Detox?

Drug detox is a process in which your body will be rid of the harmful chemicals and toxins within the body that are related to drug abuse. During this time you are likely to experience uncomfortable side effects due to the procedure, these are known as drug detox symptoms or withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms are rarely life threatening, however can easily cause you to relapse if not controlled. During the drug detox process you will be offered a prescription medication to ease any symptoms of withdrawal, allowing you to detox in a more comfortable state.

The Discomfort of Detox Withdrawal Symptoms

During drug detox the body is going through changes. You will find yourself in periods of discomfort as the body adjust to going without drugs. While the symptoms of detox withdrawal vary according to the drug abused and other factors there are many common symptoms experienced during the detox of most drugs, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss
  • Suicidal Thoughts
  • Depression
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Sweats or chills
  • Exhaustion and extreme fatigue

How Long Do Drug Detox Symptoms Last?

While drug detox symptoms all vary with the individual person and the drug abused, most will last two days to two weeks. During this time you can receive the supportive care to prevent relapse, avoid temptation and work through your physical addiction to drugs within an Drug Detox Center. You will find comfort in knowing that you can get past these symptoms of withdrawal in a way that will help ensure your success in sobriety.
